Program Notes

Challenging Impossibility chronicles the weightlifting odyssey of an unlikely strength athlete, the Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. A multifaceted savant, Sri Chinmoy lectured at major universities, wrote hundreds of books, exhibited his paintings in galleries worldwide, offered meditations regularly for United Nations staff and delegates, performed free concerts of his own music for peace at venues ranging from Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House, and sponsored a variety of marathons and ultramarathons.
For Sri Chinmoy, weightlifting was yet another channel to exhibit the true potential of human beings. Perhaps more striking than all his other achievements in art, music and philosophy, his weightlifting exploits provided undeniable visual proof of the true power we all hold within.
Challenging Impossibility features these bodybuilders as well as Carl Lewis, World' s Strongest Man Hugo Girard and appearances by Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Sting, and Susan Sarandon.
